In ancient times, when paper did not yet exist in tribes in New Caledonia, the only lasting, easy-to-use support that was readily available was bamboo.
For drawing, the Ancient Kanaks engraved bamboo using shark teeth, pointed shells or jade. The bamboo engravings of this period convey both a very unique style and vision, specific to Kanak art.
Contemporary artist Jezebruff Kabradinsky transmutes the universal beauty of these ancient designs into painting, combining material and colour by a secret monotype process.
